Brittany O'Grady Director Sophia Takal Sophia Takal, April Wolfe 3,2 of 10 country New Zealand. Pourquoi des films d'horreur pendant Noël wsh. YouTube. I think it's possible I wanted to like this movie just because of all the negative reviews it was getting- just to go against the grain. It was pretty goofy, that's true, but dumb movies can be fun sometimes. I think people's issue with this movie is the "message" that white men are evil- and that's why it's getting called the worst movie of the year. For whatever reason, the feminist stuff didn't bother me, and without factoring that in, the movie is just the average horror crap we get every year. Oh, believe me, I agree it's ridiculous and implausible, but years of watching bad, low budget slasher movies already prepared me for that. I agree that going PG-13 made it less interesting too, but for whatever reason, I didn't hate it.

Tbh it looked interesting until the unnatural part. She say period I be like periawwd. The final girl has been a staple of the genre for decades, but in 2019 female solidarity is how you survive. Ms. Wilson is a newsroom project manager. Dec. 16, 2019 Credit. Kirsty Griffin/Universal Pictures This essay contains spoilers for the 2019 remake of “Black Christmas. ” Before a masked killer invades the sorority house in “Black Christmas, ” directed by Sophia Takal and co-written by Ms. Takal and April Wolfe, the movie shows three Mu Kappa Epsilon sisters happily chatting over holiday dinner preparations. One asks her friends what their favorite animals are, and Marty (Lily Donoghue) chooses the ant. You cant kill an ant, she explains, because theyre all extensions of the others. This statement turns profound at the films climax, when a harried band of women crash into a frat house like Marvels Avengers, stopgap weapons at the ready. They have arrived just in time to rescue the protagonist, Riley (Imogen Poots) from being murdered by a lackey to the man who raped her. In any other slasher film, Riley would be the final girl — the lone young woman clever enough to outlast her peers and scrappy enough to kill the killer (or killers. But in this 2019 remake of the 1974 horror film of the same name — and the second reimagining following a 2006 version — nine other sorority members join her in solidarity to vanquish an army of misogynists. The message is simple: Women need to band together to take down the patriarchy. The original “Black Christmas” features one of the horror genres first final girls. This trope, first outlined by Carol J. Clover in her book “Men, Women and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film, ” typically meets the following criteria: The final girl is virginal or uninterested in dating. She is aware of impending danger before her peers. And she is smart and competent in ways her flirty, flighty friends usually are not, able to rig a whole house with booby traps (as in the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street”) or turn a wire hanger into a weapon (the original “Halloween”. While the final girl had more agency than most female characters in her 70s and 80s heyday (when the women of slasher films were most often topless or dead) she was alienated from other female characters — so much so that she often even had a masculine name. The final girl, like any male action hero, ultimately triumphed alone. The sisterly alliance in the newest “Black Christmas” is even more meaningful given its multiple final girl red herrings. Rileys closest Mu Kappa Epsilon sisters are Marty, Jesse (Brittany OGrady) and Kris (Aleyse Shannon. None of these four women with androgynous names pursue sex, and all are smart, capable characters with unique personalities and interests. But none of them become the final girl. Perhaps most subversively, Kris is a radical feminist hellbent on ridding their college of oppression, including Professor Gelson (Cary Elwes) a misogynistic instructor and an adviser to the evil fraternity Delta Kappa Omicron. She urges Riley, who was met with incredulity from the campus police after reporting her rape, to further challenge campus sexism by signing a petition against Professor Gelson. Kris would normally be a parody, easily mocked and murdered for her alarmist insolence. Here, she is a character to be taken seriously. The patriarchy at Hawthorne College is depicted as especially insidious. And what a patriarchy it is. The frat boys of Delta Kappa, it turns out, are collectively killing sorority sisters in a grab for the halcyon days of male dominance. Led by Professor Gelson and possessed by the spirit of Hawthornes malevolent founder, they believe that womens “true nature” is subservience, while men are “alphas. ” It seems hardly incidental, then, that Professor Gelson, with his eccentric accent and fondness for Camille Paglia, calls to mind the polarizing psychology professor Jordan Peterson. In his best-selling book “12 Rules for Life, ” Mr. Peterson posits that an oppressive patriarchy does not exist. He compares the mating rituals of lobsters, whose females are attracted to male aggressors at the expense of male weaklings, to those of humans. In a blog post on his personal website hes written, “Its been a truism among anthropologists and biologically oriented psychologists for decades that all human societies face two primary tasks: regulation of female reproduction (so the babies dont die, you see) and male aggression (so that everyone doesnt die. ” The solution: heterosexual monogamy, or women coupling with men for the greater good. Mr. Petersons thinking reaches its logical extreme in “Black Christmas, ” where a group of fed-up young men exact violence against the women who denied them their sexual supremacy. Though in that blog post Mr. Peterson says he does not excuse or glorify male violence, such bio-essentialist thinking — that women and men need discrete, gendered roles for society to function, and that those roles naturally empower men — is echoed by Professor Gelson and the Delta Kappas. “Dont you see? ” Professor Gelson asks during the final showdown. “Woman is inextricably tied to man. ” But it is her ties to women, rather than her alienation from them, that gives Riley the strength to survive the film. In an early scene, Marty, Kris and Jesse don “Mean Girls”-esque sexy Santa outfits to perform a number at the Delta Kappa talent show, but Riley feels uncomfortable joining them, knowing her rapist will be in the audience. Kris goads her into the performance: “Be a fighter, ” she urges, “for your sisters. ” At first, it seems like a bizarre exchange — how does a provocative skit empower a rape survivor? — until the groups hidden motive becomes clear. They perform a parody of “Up on the Housetop, ” indicting the fraternity for their date rape reputation. (“Up on the housetop click click click, you slipped me a roofie and then your [expletive. ”) In one of the most enjoyable scenes of the film, Riley becomes a “fighter” through comedic song and dance, with her sisters by her side. In the ensuing showdown between the sexes, its important to note that the women take up arms only for survival; the rest of their combat is rhetorical. As the film ends, Riley tells Kris: “You were right. I should have been fighting this whole time. ” Riley realizes she has the strength to speak up for herself, even in the face of an administration that did not expel her rapist, and the police officers who did not believe her. She can reassert her power, rather than make herself smaller. The women of “Black Christmas” do not just take down one campus villain, they quash an entire patriarchal army — an impossible feat for Riley, our would-be final girl, on her own. When Kris and the other women barge into the frat house before that final blood bath, Kris announces, “You messed with the wrong sisters. ” She is right. Sorority sisters become indistinguishable from radical feminist sisters. Together, these women are unstoppable. Lena Wilson ( lenalwilson) is a newsroom project manager. Continue reading What's the story? In BLACK CHRISTMAS, it's near the end of fall semester at Calvin Hawthorne University, and several sorority sisters are preparing to spend some time celebrating. Riley ( Imogen Poots) has no family to go home to. Kris ( Aleyse Shannon) is an activist who's currently trying to get a classics professor ( Cary Elwes) fired for using too many works by White men. Marty ( Lily Donoghue) and Jesse ( Brittany O'Grady) are their best friends. Together, the young women perform a musical skit during a holiday talent show in which they accuse fraternity boys of date rape. They hope to stir up a little controversy but instead start getting threatening DMs from Calvin Hawthorne himself. Then powerful masked figures show up at the sorority houses and start to kill the women. But Riley knows what to do, and it involves walking right into enemy territory. Is it any good? Having little to do with either the 1974 classic or the very poor 2006 remake, this holiday horror reboot is a strong attempt at a feminist statement that often goes either haywire or not far enough. Black Christmas, like its predecessors, is set in a sorority house at Christmastime, and there are brutal killings, but that's all these movies have in common. (The earlier two were more traditional "slasher" films. At first, the new movie raises interesting discussions about how some classes are largely taught based on the writings of White men, without much diversity. The characters even argue about it, with interesting takes. Directed and co-written by Sophia Takal, the movie also spends a little time getting to know its characters, establishing their friendships and relationships in natural ways and using the holiday atmosphere to interesting effect. But as a horror movie, Black Christmas is pretty bland; the killings aren't scary, and they don't have much emotional impact. As soon as their friends die, the other characters seem to simply forget about them. Then, the final showdown contains an evil plot so ludicrous that it largely negates all the arguments the movie was trying to make. The original 1974 version is still the best: smart, scary, and atmospheric, with strong characters and performances. This one gets points for trying, but it doesn't quite work. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about Black Christmas '  violence. Do the killings have an emotional impact? Why or why not? What is the movie trying to say about gender, equality, and diversity? Does it succeed? Should classics courses be taught using the works of White men? Would it be possible to make the classes more diverse? Are men and women equal? What steps could be taken to make both groups feel that way? Is the movie scary? What's the appeal of horror movies? Themes & Topics Our editors recommend Christmas horror comedy is dark but has genuine good cheer. Playful tone lightens time-bending slasher movie's violence. Comic horror classic is still scary; some profanity. Black christmas movies 2018. Black christmas movie song. Another thing is that I love the way the trailer sounds when you blast it, it makes it even more scarier. Wasn't this already a movie in the mid 2000s. Amazing work, subtle and crisp. Okay so I love horror and black christmas is one of the classic but this female director killed it badly like if this was a living person, she slashed it up and left it to die out on it's own. I went with my boyfriend and I told him dont be scared because he doesnt like horror movie. All we did was laugh during the whole movie because the scares were nonexistent, the characters were basic chicks and the plot was messy and dumb. Dont waste your time with this movie if you want to have someone tell at you about being scared of men when really it's even between men and women. This director needs to stay away from anymore horror movies because it's clear she didnt do enough research for this movie and its main plot. Dont watch it or you'll seriously regret it.

真逆これがXYZの時のそらまふで歌われるとは思ってなかった. ありがとう.最高でした……. Just when i thought I couldn't fall in love with Emilia Clark even more. Saw this movie and OMFG. Classic Film was better. This is a very sad and beautiful film. I cried at him. December 12, 2019 4:00PM PT The 1974 slasher film gets updated to the new age of woke feminism in the rare college horror movie that actually has something on its mind. “ Black Christmas, ” a low-budget Canadian horror movie released in 1974, was a slasher thriller with a difference: It was the very first one! Okay, there were more than a few precedents, from “Psycho” (the great-granddaddy of the genre) to “The Last House on the Left” and “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” to Mario Bavas “A Bay of Blood. ” But “ Black Christmas, ” directed by the not so horror-minded Bob Clark (who went on to make “Porkys” and “A Christmas Story”) may have been the first movie to draw the slasher components together, almost by happenstance, into a mythological commercial template: the plot that ritualistically knocks off one pretty young thing after the next; the dark-side-of-a-holiday title; the ending that suggests that the evil will just go on. (You could argue that the entire ethos of franchise culture was born, four years later, in the look-well-do-anything-to-spawn-a-sequel! final shot of “Halloween. ”) That, however, was a thousand slasher movies ago. “Black Christmas, ” the new remake of the 1974 film (there was another remake in 2006) is also a slasher thriller with a difference, in this case the novelty being that the movie, in its deviously sensational psycho-with-a-longbow way, is actually rooted in something relevant and interesting. Once again, a group of sorority sisters are stalked in their group home by a mysterious killer (or, in this case, killers. But the women in the new “Black Christmas” are more than victims; they have agency — and personality. Theyre seniors at Hawthorne University who are spending the last night of fall semester on campus before the holidays, and whats on their minds are the interlocking ways that men — in frat houses, in classrooms, and through the ages — have built an entire system out of pushing them around. Imogen Poots, who has always been such a compelling actress, brings a pensive heart and seen-it-all delicacy to the role of Riley, who three years ago was sexually assaulted at a frat party after she had passed out. The film tackles the aspect of frat culture that slides, behaviorally and ideologically, into rape culture: the ritualistic devotion to binge partying where young men try to break down womens resistance by encouraging them to drink as much as possible, so that — in the minds of the men, at least — the issue of consent is left in the dust. Three years ago, when Riley accused Brian (Ryan McIntyre) of raping her, the system of justice didnt believe her story — but thats because of how the system, at college, is built (in reality, if unofficially) around a certain what-happens-at-the-frat-bash-stays-at-the-frat-bash cult of animal-house hedonism. “Bad” behavior, and that includes the crime of rape, gets swept under the beer-soaked carpet. Its Rileys buddy, Kris (Aleyse Shannon) who brings these issues to the fore. Kris is a college activist whos crusading against “the white-supremacist patriarchy. ” Shes got a petition going to fire Professor Gelson, an English teacher played with sly-dog unctuousness by Cary Elwes, whos got a canonical chip on his shoulder that turns, on occasion, into fits of classroom rage. Its easy, and tempting, to imagine a movie that offered a subtler dissection of these issues — like, say, a gender-based variation on “Dear White People. ” Yet the elemental women-v. -men aggression of “Black Christmas” meshes well with the films landscape of heightened horror. Riley, Kris, and several of their M U Kappa sisters show up at the Founders fraternity in holiday elf suits to perform a song-and-dance number, only to turn it into a holly jolly Christmas-carol call-out of rape culture entitled “Up On the Frat House” (“Ho, ho, ho! I didnt know! ”. “Black Christmas” may be the first film outside of Takashi Miikes “Audition” to offer a fusion of woke sociology and vengeful violence, and the result is an innovative if at times crudely diverting fright flick in which the heroines, and the villains as well, are all playing their part in a larger scheme. The slasher madness arrives as payback for that accusatory song performance, which Riley sings while staring into Brians eyes. (Does he feel guilty? No, he winks. But the frat already has its male-supremacist insanity thing going. It has updated the hazing rites for the age of #MeToo, so that in a hidden room, we observe slivers of a ceremony in which the pledges wear medieval robes and masks like the ones in “Eyes Wide Shut, ” standing before a bust of the colleges founder that literally cries tears of black blood. These dudes are operating out of a belief system — their conviction that the rise of feminine power is phasing them out. “Black Christmas, ” in its way, gives hyperbolic vent to a certain 21st-century male paranoia. Especially when the hooded figures start to show up in the shadows of the sorority, like Death from “The Seventh Seal” with better weapons. People begin to die, but the movie, directed and co-written with utilitarian urgency by Sophia Takal, keeps the women alive as characters. Its not just that they want to escape. They want to find out whos doing this to them and why, and when they go back to the frat house to unmask their tormentors, “Black Christmas” turns into an entertainingly over-the-top face-off. You cant take a movie like this too seriously, but its still one of the rare slasher films that offers a holiday from bloodshed for its own sake. David Heymans Heyday Films, the company behind this years hot Oscar contenders “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Marriage Story, ” is set to produce “Shackleton, ” the long-gestating biopic of legendary polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, with Tom Hardy on board to play the title role. Black christmas movies 2020.

Makes the last Black Christmas remake look good. Thats an achievement

I honestly feel like we deserve another Rudolph movie. Prime Video Classic Christmas movies hold a special sort of charm that are so different from the newer Hallmark Christmas movies or Netflix original Christmas movies. The old black-and-white Christmas movies somehow capture everything we love about the holidays, particularly the nostalgia factor. There's something so magical about cuddling up by the fire and watching Donna Reed and James Stewart's romance in It's a Wonderful Life, or Natalie Wood as the charming Susan Walker in Miracle on 34th Street. You likely remember tuning in with your own parents, grandparents, cousins, or siblings when you were a kid, waiting anxiously to see Santa arrive on the screen or singing along to your favorite Christmas songs. Thankfully, it's easy to pass the tradition onto your own family. After you've decorated the tree and hung the stockings with care, gather everyone together and choose one of these beloved classic Christmas movies to enjoy. They may not be familiar with them yet, but we're willing to bet they'll bask in the merriment as much as you do. Plus, you can always watch a funny Christmas movie or Christmas movie for kids after, should the little ones need a little incentive to sit through mom and dad's pick. It's A Wonderful Life Frank Capra's 1946 film is considered to be one of the best movies ever, coming in eleventh place on the list of  100 Greatest American Films Of All Time  by the American Film Institute. 1 of 35 White Christmas The whole family will be singing along to this comedy about a talented foursome who put on an extravagant Christmas show. 2 of 35 Little Women Louisa May Alcotts novel makes for an inspired holiday movie about family and love. 3 of 35 A Charlie Brown Christmas Charlie Brown will inspire audiences of all ages to look for the true meaning of Christmas. 4 of 35 Meet Me in St. Louis Judy Garland is unforgettable in the musical that revolves around the 1904 World's Fair. 5 of 35 Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer There are few movies more magical than Rudolph. Whether youre watching for the first or the fiftieth time, this classic never fails. 6 of 35 National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation It's a relatively new classic, but a classic nonetheless! The Griswold family will delight you with their now-legendary antics. 7 of 35 Beauty and the Beast This 1991 cartoon is perfect for the whole family—and that snowball fight scene is peak Christmas. We dare you not to sing along! 8 of 35 Holiday Inn Irving Berlin's song "White Christmas" was eventually adapted into a full-length feature shot in color, but listen to the original version in this 1942 musical. 9 of 35 Miracle on 34th Street This movie was remade in 1994 with Mara Wilson and Richard Attenborough, but head back to the 1947 version for the original magic. 10 of 35 You've Got Mail No, it's not outrightly a Christmas movie, but we consider it one! There are tons of festive scenes in this classic romantic comedy, which is actually a remake of  The Shop Around the Corner. 11 of 35 A Norman Rockwell Christmas Story What's more classic than a Norman Rockwell painting? In this film, you'll see one brought to life—along with all the Christmassy goodness you could ask for. 12 of 35 One Christmas Did someone say "Katharine Hepburn"  We're sold. 13 of 35 The Great Rupert A friendly squirrel helps out a down-on-their-luck family in the 1950s classic that also goes by the name A Christmas Wish. 14 of 35 3 Godfathers Three men try to transport a newborn baby to New Jerusalem after the childs mother dies in the desert. 15 of 35 Frosty the Snowman 16 of 35 The Holly & The Ivy Widowed reverend Martin's detachment from his family is always at its worst during Christmas. But the tension finally comes to a head when his children reunite for the holidays. 17 of 35 Come to the Stable Two nuns are determined to build a New England childrens hospital, and must overcome several challenges with the local townsfolk to do so. 18 of 35 I'll Be Seeing You Ginger Rogers plays a convict who has been released for Christmas. (Fun fact: it was remade in 1996 as  The Preacher's Wife  with Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston. ) 30 of 35.

Liam Neeson, Lesley Manville; Writers: Owen McCafferty; UK; release year: 2019; Romance; Duration: 92Minute. Lyrics that tore me open. Dokładnie tak... So my mom died 20 something ago. Dad, 10 ago. Brother, 5 ago. All cancer. And then a few years ago, out of no where, we find an aggressive tumor in my wifes breast. Had we Found it one year later and shes gone. Yet, Im by her side. Our three kids are by our side. And the Lord, kept by all out sides. Kept by my side. She all clear now. And on we go. It's funny how songs that you used to hear years ago can have a significant impact years later. I finally met a woman who is perfect to me, and this song describes how I feel about her and our first encounter. Unfortunately, after a solid, strong year together, she's battling cancer and she's pushing me away, hard. I still continue to be there for her, but not knowing if she's going to make it through hurts and leaves me feeling lost and confused. I can't even listen to this song without crying my eyes out now.

'Ordinary Love (2019) is exactly what it says on the tin: a portrait of mundane, turbulent, beautiful love. It charts the journey of a couple moving through tough times and is as thoughtful and nuanced as you'd hope. Its story is rather straightforward (it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect) but it delivers what it needs to and feels all the more 'real' because of it. The focus of the film is something that isn't actually explored all that often and it's great to see it portrayed so sensitively here. The picture's grounded, non- romanticised' romance is brilliant, too. It feels as close to 'real' as possible, an honest and moving exploration of love that never seems heightened or false. The two stars deliver the goods in their subtle, harder-than-you-may-expect roles, coming together as a compelling pair of, essentially, real people. They have flaws and they argue but they also have an undeniable connection. When this is exploited, it's really heart-warming. When it comes down to it, though, the flick just isn't all that exciting or, perhaps, impactful. It's engaging enough and never even close to boring, but it doesn't quite hit home as hard as it ought to. It's good, don't get me wrong. I can't quite put into words what it is that it is, for me, missing. I guess I'll say it like this: it's good, but it's not great. 6/10.

乁(ッ)厂 <なんだこの神曲は. 노래진짜 개좋음 박경 제대로 한건했네 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ. My favorite U2 song! Sweet. Sometimes keeping a film simple and not overdoing it with dramatic music or big set plays actually allows a film to resonate to a larger extent and that's certainly the case here. A reminder that Neeson is actually quite the versatile actor with the right material and a powerful lead alongside him. Emotional and a story that will likely effect most of us at sometime an intelligent, respectful yet all the powerful for it film that did not overstate or understate in any department but struck the perfect tone. Not necessarily for everyone but I for one thought it was fantastic.

I love this song. Just maybe the lyrics describe her feelings. Only one word to describe this song... BEAUTIFUL. Ordinary Love is a really surprising film. It's by no means a perfect film but it is a really enjoyable film with emotion done well without feeling too over the top especially for a cancer film.
Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville are really great here. They really do carry this film. Since it is primarily focused on these two characters and pretty much no one else. Liam Neeson is really great here and it makes me wonder why he hasn't done more action films.
Overall it's a very simple told very effectively. It does have a lot emotion and it really does work especially the ending. But it's definitely worth watching.

One of the best actors of our time. Beautifully written I think most people can relate to this story performances are fabulous. Definitely 10/10. That's an immediate gold-medal from Bono (and me of course) I wish, that he and the rest of U2 people could see and hear you now; doing this beautiful yet strong and raspy, especially your own Allie-styled and stamped lovely dedication to their hit-song. I could listen to you from dusk till dawn and more, but that's what we fans do. again there looks having been pretty cold that time, so you couldn't had kept your fingers moving' all that time thou. hugs, xx 💖💖💖.

Let any other ‘ethnic minority say what he said about another race will that person still be in work. Finally: This is U2 and the best thing since 2004. They never never ever dissapointed me. The idea that in our tech modern world an app could be developed to connect the living to the dead is intriguing. But this movie was less about the app and more about interpersonal relationships of characters. No thought was put into the development process of the app, it's true potential or limitations, or purpose. The actor playing Sam was so terrible at playing a socially awkward IT-nerd. The couple's fight the night before their marriage was without any substance or reason. The fact that they all got up and left on some adventure regardless of the next day's ceremony was unconvincing. The revenge theme was entirely predictable. So much wasted potential in the premise. And what the hell was up with the very last scene. So confused.

How to know that a film sucks, Lucy hale is the principal. So this is the vacation bill went on after, “It” ended. So awesome... My favorite actor mark dacascos.

The movie Zombi Child from director Bertrand Bonello ( Nocturama, Saint Laurent) injects history and politics into an unconventional cross-genre film. Opening in 1962 Haiti, the horror-fantasy follows the real-life story of Clairvius Narcisse (Mackenson Bijou) who falls dead on the street but is soon turned into a “zombi” when he is dug up from his grave and forced to work on a sugar-cane plantation. Shifting to present-day Paris at the Légion dhonneur boarding school, a rebellious teen named Fanny (Louise Labèque) befriends Melissa (Wislanda Louimat) who moved to France when her parents died in the 2010 Haiti earthquake. After recruiting her into a secret literary sorority, Fanny learns of Melissas connection to Clairvius, and becomes obsessed with her new friends past and culture, soon doing the unthinkable: seeking out her voodoo mambo aunt to solve her recent heartbreak.

Another day another zombie movie.

I will never in my life watch this

Normally I don't like cover songs, but wow, this cover is incredible... Although the last twenty minutes are breathless, the introduction languishes and lasts about eighty minutes. Thus, in order to appreciate the very ending, you'll have to be patient. very patient... Zombi vikash dhorasoo. It would've be an honor to meet him. 😔💔. Simon Abrams January 24, 2020 The new French voodoo/gothic drama “Zombi Child” is mostly satisfying, but also a little frustrating because of its creators walking-on-shells sensitivity. Written and directed by Bertrand Bonello (“ Nocturama, ” “House of Tolerance”) “Zombi Child” definitely feels like the kind of movie whose creators might defend its existence by noting that “the film is thoroughly and precisely documented” (as Bonello does in the movies press notes. After all, “Zombi Child” is a multi-generational cautionary tale thats focused on Haitian voodoo and the way that its seen with a mix of fascination and skepticism by a new generation of young Frenchwomen, including Mélissa ( Wislanda Louimat) a Haitian schoolgirl whose familys ties to voodoo culture are somewhat explained throughout the movie, but never fully demystified. Advertisement Much of “Zombi Child” isnt even directly about Mélissa or her heritage; instead, Bonello usually treats her as the subject of unsettling fascination for Fanny (Louise Labéque) a lovesick and very fair teenager whos also obsessed with the memory of her boyfriend Pablo ( Sayyid El Alami. In that sense, the slow, semi-naturalistic process by which we learn about Fannys intentions—she wants to use voodoo to get closer to Pablo—says a lot about “Zombi Child. ” Its a horror-drama that draws inspiration from earlier genre touchstones like “White Zombie, ” “I Walked With a Zombie, ” and “The Serpent and The Rainbow. ” Its also very much about its creators self-conscious outsiders view of the eerie beauty and material reality of voodoo, which is itself still an outsider culture in France and beyond. Plot isnt really the thing in “Zombi Child, ” since the movie is explicitly about a disjointed “subterranean history” of events, as Fanny and Mélissas 19th century history teacher ( Patrick Boucheron) explains during an introductory lecture. In this monologue, were told that the concept of history as a progress narrative is suspect given how exclusive that organizing principle is. Are stories or events that dont fit these narratives any less authentic? “Zombi Child” is, in some ways, an attempt to answer that question with a counter-narrative about an unidentified Haitian man ( Mackenson Bijou) who, in 1962, was buried alive by white colonists, and brought back to life as an undead zombi slave. This mans connection with Mélissa is unclear for a while, but there is obviously something between them, just as theres an undefined, but powerful kind of attraction between Fanny and Mélissa. Fanny wants something from Mélissa given her association with voodoo, like when Mélissa recites René Depestres Captain Zombi  poem during an initiation ceremony for Fannys literary sorority. But its hard to tell how these two narrative threads are related until later on in the movie. Thankfully, following Bonellos disjointed story is never boring thanks to his and his collaborators knack for dramatizing the romantic, but callow aspects of Fanny and Mélissas angsty teenage lives. “Zombi Child” is obviously not a run-of-the-mill teen drama, but its still satisfying for the mix of empathy, fascination, and mild critical distance that Bonello uses to depict Fanny and Mélissas otherwise inaccessible world of sisterly bonding and schoolyard daydreaming. Many scenes in “Zombi Child” end without much dramatic fanfare; some scenes end right after some narratively inconsequential detail is used to paint a fuller picture of Fanny and Mélissas boarding school-life. So while Fanny s online keyword-searches for information on “voodoo possession” and priestess-like “mambos” may not be typical, but they are presented in a refreshingly matter-of-fact way. Bonello often resists the temptation to criticize his young protagonists too harshly. He lets their contradictory and sometimes fickle behavior speak for them, as when Fannys friends (all white) try to decide if Mélissa is “cool” or “weird” before they wonder aloud if a boy is genuinely attractive or only “fake sexy. ” Soon after that, they all sing a French rap song with lyrics like "I hate cops ‘cause cops hate what we are, ” "only my crew knows who I am, ” and "this ain't love, I just want your ass. ” Bonellos young heroines are, in that sense, allowed to be young without being condemned too harshly for it. Then again, Bonellos general preference for keeping several key plot points ambiguous is ultimately what makes “Zombi Child” a good, but not great story about counter-culture, as its experienced by members of a dominant culture. As involving and genuinely exciting as much of Bonellos frank teen drama may be, it only says so much about who gets to write history, and what their motives are. I like “Zombi Child” for its frank, seductive depiction of clashing cultures, as well as the care and reverence that Bonello brings to the direction and lighting of his movies Haiti-set scenes. I just wish there was more to the movie than whats presented on-screen. Reveal Comments comments powered by.

No joke: I got a 10 second ad for The Turning right before the trailer played lol. Why this now in my recommendations and how come I ain't never heard of this movie. Beginning in Haiti in the early sixties, Zombi Child" deals with voodoo and is one of the best and most poetic horror films in many a moon. It is obvious from the title and the setting that we are meant to think of a much earlier film with a similar setting but that would appear to be where the comparisons with Jacques Tourneur's "I Walked with a Zombie" ends for in the next scene we are in comtemporary France and a group of schoolgirls are being taught French history in a very white classroom.
What follows is a deliciously unsettling movie that manages to encompass the pains of teenage romance with a tale of the 'undead' as a metaphor for colonialism and it actually works. I can't think of too many examples in recent cinema where two opposing themes have been as beautifully united as they are here. In some ways it's closer to something like "The Neon Demon" or the recent remake of "Suspiria" than it is to Val Lewton. Here is a film with a creeping sense of dread, we've all seen films in which schoolgirls are not as sweet as they appear to be) and the grand guignol finale is as spooky as a good horror movie should be. It also confirms director Bertrand Bonello as one of the most exciting talents working anywhere today.

So a scary version of Bubble Boy? War of the Worlds looking interesting, hope the HMS Thunder Child gets good play. Stay out of my shed. Stay out of my SHEEEEEEDDD. Any list of the most romantic movies—this one narrowed to movies in the English language—is going to draw sighs and harrumphs over beloved films left off. Quite a few unforgettable love stories are in movies that dont comfortably fit the category ( Gone with the Wind, for instance) and the contemporary rom-com, while classifiably romantic, can seem as slight as the dandelion—a sunny flowering, a puffball dispersed on a breeze. Movies that reach the romantic pantheon often have more at stake than a trip to the altar and dont always end up happily. Some invoke the archetypes of myth and fairy tale, diving into the deeper imaginative realms of high Romanticism, a movement enamored of mystery and nature untamed. Others are modeled on the literary “romance, ” a centuries-old genre of narrative fiction that combines adventure, idealism, and courtly love, as exemplified by King Arthur and his Round Table. These tales frequently take place on a journey where desire is set against duty, and where love alters destiny. The mortal dislocations of World War II—our “Good War”—are formidably represented in the realm of the romantic. Casablanca, for example, sees patriotism prevailing over the love of one person. The English Patient sees the reverse. At the same time, high-flying ideals can become straitjackets or self-sabotage. Alfred Hitchcocks Notorious keys into a dark vein of lyricism, a place where self-sacrifice becomes voluptuous and ill. One thinks of William Blakes iconic line, which sounds the bass note of Romantic poetry, “O Rose thou art sick. ” That said, it is lyricism in all its textures—dark, light, aural, visual—that lifts these films to higher ground. Rodgers and Hart, in their song “Isnt It Romantic? ” describe the feeling as “music in the night, a dream that can be heard … moving shadows write the oldest magic word. ” Those moving shadows are movies. THE AGE OF INNOCENCE 1993 Beautiful and grave from the first strains of Gounods Faust to the last ray of sun bouncing off a window, Martin Scorseses film version of Edith Whartons greatest novel gets richer with every viewing. This period drama was a departure for Scorsese, until then known primarily for street, gang, and Mafia movies. But were the fabled 400 of New Yorks Gilded Age any less controlling than the Cosa Nostra? Newland Archer, played by Daniel Day-Lewis, hasnt sold his soul to the devil but to a gilded ideal. His marriage to the angelic debutante May Welland (Winona Ryder) will fulfill every conventional wish. But in Mays unconventional, unhappily married cousin, the Countess Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer) he awakens to another ideal—the romance of deep affinity. This new love is blocked at every turn. But by whom or what? New York society closing ranks? Newlands own pride of place? Or a moral code that wills out? Its unbearably poignant, this life suspended between ideals. THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY 1964 This movie works hard not to be on this list. It questions all the romantic clichés: self-sacrifice, heroism on the battlefield, loyalty in the bedroom. Directed by Arthur Hiller from a script by Paddy Chayefsky, The Americanization of Emily stars Julie Andrews, in her most crystalline period, and James Garner, everyones favorite good guy. Emily, having lost her father, brother, and husband to W. W. II, is sick of the cultural complicity that pushes men to be heroes. She believes a living coward is better than a wounded (or dead) warrior with a medal. Garner thinks similarly but opportunistically, without the moral dimension. Events twist and turn. Somehow he ends up as the “first man on Omaha Beach. ” The movie is beguilingly intelligent, funny, and, in the last reel, romantic. Andrews and Garner have both said its their favorite of their films. BEFORE SUNRISE / BEFORE SUNSET / BEFORE MIDNIGHT 1995, 2004, 2013 Eros on location. The first movie in this trilogy is about two students who meet on a train, get off in Vienna, and pass the hours before a flight walking, talking, and falling in love. As Celine, Julie Delpy, of the honey-colored hair and full mouth, could be a pre-Raphaelite nymph, and Ethan Hawkes Jesse, with his glittering eyes and cool-dude goatee, is Mallarmés Faun (“Did I love a dream? ”. The following two movies, at nine-year intervals, catch up with the pair in Paris and then in Greece. Action consists of dialogue interwoven with desire: Vienna is reminiscent of late-night dorm discussions about life; Paris is more psychologically revealing and tinged with confusion; in Greece resentments flare and shadows lengthen. Directed by Richard Linklater, the trilogy dispenses with the usual climb toward happy endings, a story tied up with a bow, and instead finds romance in immediacy—the blue dart in the eternal flame. BRIEF ENCOUNTER 1945 Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard play “ordinary people” Laura Jesson and Dr. Alec Harvey, and Rachmaninoffs Piano Concerto No. 2—practically another character—plays the crashing, roiling wave of love that takes them both by surprise. “Noel Cowards Brief Encounter, ” as the movie is formally billed, was based on Cowards one-act play Still Life. It explores the deepening relationship between two married people of high morals who meet by chance in a train station. David Lean directed, pulling performances of understated passion from Johnson and Howard. Robert Kraskers black-and-white cinematography, justly admired for its shadows and fog, wears a darkness both sooty and soft. Renunciation can be beautiful, but it can also be bleak. The ending—Johnsons luminous eyes, Howards Arthurian brow—is wrenching. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN 2005 Its testament to our increasing enlightenment that this movie about the secret love affair between two cowboys ranks 12th among the highest-grossing romantic dramas of all time. Its a heartbreaker. The late Heath Ledger, in the role of Ennis Del Mar, underplays stoicism—which takes some doing. No one can know him because he hardly knows himself, except for one thing: he knows that he loves Jack Twist. Jake Gyllenhaal as Jack is less frightened by their love. He wears his heart, well, not on his sleeve but close at hand. (Ennis wont wear his heart anywhere. And he has a vision of the life they could have together. But Ennis cant go there. So close, so far. Their two shirts in the closet—one over the other on a single hanger—embody everything, profoundly. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain. Focus Features/Photofest. CARMEN JONES 1954 “You go for me and Im taboo. But if youre hard to get I go for you. ” Thats the motto of Carmen Jones, a red rose inside a red flame. One of the most successful updates of an opera, this artful film, conceived and directed by Otto Preminger, is not a conventional musical but more a drama with music. The melodies are from Georges Bizets Carmen of 1875, the words are by Oscar Hammerstein II, the time and place is North Carolina during W. II, and the cast is black, with a bewitching Dorothy Dandridge as Jones and Harry Belafonte as the love-obsessed Joe. This is romance as danger, as doom, a fate writ large in Carmens delicious wardrobe (designed by Mary Ann Nyberg. That sinuous coral dress with the slashes over the heart says it all. Dandridge was nominated for the Academy Award for best actress, a first for an African-American woman. CASABLANCA 1942 Where to begin? Theres the great cast: Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre. And the great moment: nervous, nervy locals silencing Nazi officers with a passionate rendition of “La Marseillaise. ” And the great song: Dooley Wilson singing Herman Hupfelds “As Time Goes By. ” There are the immortal lines: “Heres looking at you, kid, ” and “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world she walks into mine, ” and “Well always have Paris. ” And the swift, punch-the-studio-time-clock transcendence of director Michael Curtiz. And the shocks of North African sun, of searchlights and moonlight in the night, courtesy of cinematographer Arthur Edeson. And theres the last scene, blanketed in gray-velvet fog, in which a skein of glances looms the most powerful triangle in cinematic history. Bogart-Bergman-Henreid. But more than that: love-war-duty. THE ENGLISH PATIENT 1996 World War II again. Zinc bars, cartography in Cairo, the glorious English, and love blossoming like a succulent in strange, dry places. The desert, the plane, the scarf, the cave, Ralph Fiennes in profile, and Kristin Scott Thomas stepping out of her bath—afternoon tea and the Wagnerian “Liebestod” of it all. Anthony Minghellas movie, based on Michael Ondaatjes stunningly voluptuous novel, works on the scale of grand opera. Little lives, historic upheaval, gargantuan passions. Tears, more tears, and we all die alone. Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas in The English Patient., By Phil Bray/Tiger Moth/Miramax/The Kobal Collection. GHOST 1990 Commerce between the living and the dead is the stuff of ghost stories, but when that commerce is love we move into the realm of Orpheus. This genre—the supernatural romantic fantasy—contains masterpieces: 1947s dashing and dansant The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and the 1956 screen adaptation of Rodgers and Hammersteins Carousel. Jerry Zuckers Ghost is not a masterpiece, but it has an aching lyricism unique in contemporary film. Demi Moore, tremulous in a pixie cut, is at her loveliest. And the late Patrick Swayze is a concentrated presence, one of those actors the audience just feels for. He was perfectly cast in the kinetic coming-of-age romance Dirty Dancing, and hes perfectly cast here, as the ardent ghost with unfinished business. HOLIDAY 1938 While The Philadelphia Story (1940) enjoys most-favored status, its slightly older cousin, Holiday, which also stars Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, is a deeper, more poignant study of human nature. Derived from a play by Philip Barry (again like The Philadelphia Story) Holiday is The Age of Innocence in reverse. Grant is freethinking Johnny Case, a self-made success who wrestles with whether or not he should marry into stiff, snooty society. Doris Nolans Julia Seton is a strong temptation. But her older sister, Linda, more insecure and vulnerable—played with fire by Hepburn—is the soul match. Shed follow Johnny anywhere (as would we) but will he see that shes the one? I KNOW WHERE IM GOING! 1945 The film critic Pauline Kael loved this Powell and Pressburger gem, and today it is a cult among poetic bluestockings. Set during W. II—as are so many of the movies on this list—it takes place in the stark and savage Scottish Hebrides, and fits into that classic genre in which a woman falls in love with the right man as she travels to wed the wrong one. Wendy Hiller fights the feeling, but the incomparable Roger Livesey, aided by wind and sea, gray seals and a golden eagle, is too much for her. The story and screenplay for this fairy tale—complete with a curse—were written in less than a week, clearly in a state of enchantment. IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT 1934 The odds were against this one. Claudette Colbert was practically the last choice for the female lead. And Clark Gable did it only because MGM lent him, at a profit, to Columbia. Directed by Frank Capra, the movie ended up sweeping the top five Academy Awards of 1934. Colbert plays a bratty heiress on the lam without money, who, in exchange for help, gives her story to the roguish reporter played by Gable. Their adventures leave us with a gallery of indelible images: the Walls of Jericho (a motel room divided by a blanket on a string) the how-to-hitchhike lesson; the runaway bride, white tulle flying like a comets tail. With her man-in-the-moon beauty and 30s slouch, Colbert is more Pierrot than Columbine. Shes just right for Gable, her Harlequin. Their journey has the rough-and-tumble, seat-of-the-pants quality of commedia dellarte, transplanted to the dusty roads of the Northeast Corridor. THE LONG, HOT SUMMER 1958 His name is Ben Quick, hes a barn burner, and hes played by a sizzling Paul Newman. Yet it still takes all summer to woo and win the cool drink of lemonade that is Joanne Woodward in the role of Clara Varner. The magnificent Orson Welles is her father, and he wants Quick to marry Clara and bring fresh blood into the family. With Angela Lansbury, Lee Remick, and Anthony Franciosa rounding out this classy, randy romp through William Faulkner, its an Actors Studio contact high. Watch Newman with the sound off and his body telegraphs everything. Turn the sound back on and hes a troubadour poet. “Ill bet you was a mighty appealin little girl, ” Ben tells Clara. “Ill bet you knew where to look for robins eggs and blackberries. Ill bet you had a doll with no head on it. ” Irresistible. LOVE AFFAIR 1939 AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER 1957 It begins with two beautiful specimens: he a Sunday painter and she a nightclub singer, both engaged to wealthy others. Meeting aboard ship, they recognize that they are the same species—kept lightweights—and they begin to pal around. By the end of the crossing they are in love. But is it real and can they afford to stay together? They decide to rendezvous in six months, at the top of the Empire State Building. If both show, its a go. One doesnt show. and both deepen. The first version stars the ineffable twosome Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne—Veuve Clicquot! The second version, not as light, perhaps a sauterne, has Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. Either way—Leo McCarey directed both—have hankies ready for the final scene. LOVE STORY 1970 Erich Segals screenplay came first and then Paramount Pictures asked him to write the novel, published as a preview to the movie, which premiered 10 months later. So it was studio synergy plus an Ivy League setting: Harvard, as in Ryan ONeal, and Radcliffe, Ali MacGraw. Love Story has a famously blunt opening line, “What can you say about a 25-year-old girl who died? ” and an equally famous, if dubious, last line, “Love means never having to say youre sorry. ” Its a soap, no question, and despite the title there isnt much story. Brains working overtime disdained the movie. Nevertheless, it was huge. The badinage between ONeal and MacGraw was a fresh update on the classic rich-boy-loves-poor-girl formula, bringing the word “preppy” into the wider culture. And the death of Ali MacGraws Jenny gave a lot of people a good cathartic cry. Ryan ONeal and Ali MacGraw in Love Story., From Paramount Pictures/The Neal Peters Collection. NOTORIOUS 1946 Has any director staged them with such a consummate blend of intensity, delicacy, and languor? In the movies of Alfred Hitchcock, the world ceases to exist outside a kiss. In this masterpiece, Ingrid Bergmans Alicia Huberman, the daughter of a convicted Nazi spy, attempts to escape both herself and the world through fast living. When she falls in love with Cary Grants T. R. Devlin, a government agent, she becomes a U. S. spy to be near him, to please him, and to punish herself— and him. Hitchcock laces this love story with poison: intonations of self-obliteration, self-sacrifice slipping into sadomasochism. As for the luminous black-and-white cinematography: a thousand shades of gray. NOW, VOYAGER 1942 This was the favorite movie of Americas most inventive fashion designer, Geoffrey Beene. He loved Bette Daviss transformation from a deeply dowdy (read: traumatized) 30-ish homebody to the glamorous woman of the world she becomes once she gets away from her soul-crushing mother. It happens on a cruise, her first travel on her own; and a stylish medley of hats and gloves, capes and veils, signals her thrilling metamorphosis. One of the catalysts for this change is a man she meets on board, the deeply decent yet unhappily married Paul Henreid. They become lovers, but the physical relationship must end when they both return to responsibilities at home. Their love, however, goes through its own metamorphosis, touching the sublime in sublimation, a shimmer captured in the unforgettable last line, “Dont lets ask for the moon. We have the stars. ” AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN 1982 It wasnt going to end happily ever after. Director Taylor Hackford and star Richard Gere initially thought such an ending would betray the blue-collar, working-class dynamics of this scruffy story. Everyone here is trying to get up to the next rung: the young men enrolled in the U. Navys aviation officer candidate school, as well as the young women in the local mills, who date the prospective officers and dream of marrying one (which some do, oops, by getting pregnant. Gere is Zack Mayo, a hustler who has nowhere to go but up. into the clouds, he hopes, as a navy flier. Between the tough love of Sergeant Foley, played by Louis Gossett Jr., and the honest (not to mention undeniably hot) love of girlfriend Paula—Debra Winger, fresh off her success in Urban Cowboy —Gere grows in character. The rousing finale—chills—is earned. THE REMAINS OF THE DAY 1993 When a house—the manor and its manners—is more important than the people who run it, what happens to love? Where does a life “in service” end and a private life begin? These are the questions that haunt The Remains of the Day, the Merchant Ivory film based on Kazuo Ishiguros Booker Prize–winning novel of 1989. The answers to these questions have consequences that are personal, of course, but also political. Anthony Hopkins, as the English butler Stevens—chief of staff for Lord Darlington—is quietly loved by the housekeeper Miss Kenton, played by Emma Thompson. He is so caught up in correctness that he cant see a crime occurring under his nose. When Stevens finally opens his eyes, and his heart, he understands—as Edith Whartons Newland Archer did before him—that being correct is sometimes the wrong answer, a crime against oneself. ROMAN HOLIDAY 1953 Audrey Hepburn would go on to star in a slew of chaste and charming fairy-tale romances—including Sabrina, Funny Face, and My Fair Lady —but this was the movie that made her a Hollywood princess. Certainly her peculiar blend of innocence, gravity, and grace was perfect for the runaway royalty she plays here. Tired of airless hotel rooms and state ceremony, Princess Ann escapes into the night and spends the next day experiencing Rome with a good-natured guy, Gregory Peck, and his pal Eddie Albert. She doesnt know that they are newspaper reporters who are scooping her story, and Peck doesnt know that hes going to fall in love with this princess. The ending is all in the eyes and unspeakably affecting. SAY ANYTHING. 1989 Looking like Elvis Presleys baby-faced younger brother (if he had one) John Cusack is utterly endearing in this little love story with an outsize fan base. He plays average guy Lloyd Dobler (which makes you think of “dabbler”) who has just graduated from high school and is besotted with Diane Court (Ione Skye) the shy class valedictorian. He asks her out, and on a lark she says yes. Its kismet, and this dewy, poignant pair of lovebirds coos through the summer until Diane must fly to England for a fellowship. The movie marked Cameron Crowes directorial debut, and it plays like a series of set pieces, all of them closing in on the human heart. Lili Taylor as Corey, Lloyds close friend, is hilarious and beatific at once. SENSE AND SENSIBILITY 1995 Every movie based on the work of Jane Austen is romantic, and God knows there are viewers who still havent recovered from Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy in 1995s BBC production of Pride and Prejudice. But that year also brought forth Sense and Sensibility, directed by Ang Lee, from a screenplay by Emma Thompson. In its fiercely composed, almost metaphysical landscapes, its brushstrokes of deep darkness, the movie invokes and then challenges the high Romanticism that is one of the novels themes. The cast is showstopping. A young Kate Winslet is the too passionately romantic Marianne, Thompson is the too selfless Elinor, and Greg Wise, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman are their too divine love interests. So lets give the BBC—with Firth and Jennifer Ehle (the definitive Elizabeth Bennet! —the prize for best Pride and Prejudice. Which leaves 1995s Sense and Sensibility to win best Jane Austen film to date. THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER 1940 Charm, charm, and more charm. Set in a gift shop in Budapest, where theres much ado about a music box for cigarettes/candy, Ernst Lubitschs romantic comedy is a gift in itself, offering up delightful performances when opened. The Austrian sheers on the store windows tuck the viewer in to 99 cozy minutes as elfin Margaret Sullavan spars with the heartbreakingly young and elegant James Stewart (the acting chops are already there—the touchy cross-currents playing about the cloudless face. They irritate each other at every turn, these two co-workers, and have no idea that they also happen to be each others “Dear Friend, ” anonymous pen pals, sharing their hearts through the mail. Frank Morgan, that grand MGM staple, turns in a touching performance as their temperamental boss, Hugo Matuschek. The script is a delicious Hungarian pastry. And the last reel pure joy! THE WAY WE WERE 1973 You can view it as a vanity production if you want, but this movie with almost no plot—its more of a big-budget home movie following the fates of a few college classmates from the 30s to the 50s—strangely holds up. Barbra Streisands Katie is the ugly-duckling campus Communist who loves Robert Redfords golden-boy writer, Hubbell, from afar. After graduation she goes glossy and bags Redford, who, like a postwar F. Scott Fitzgerald (which makes Streisand a sort of crazy Zelda) takes her to Hollywood, where he writes screenplays and she gets all activist again, this time about the blacklist. Katies tugging insecurity about her looks is the wrinkle in the romance: she cant believe a beauty like Hubbell could actually love her. They break up without ever discussing why, crushing the hearts of ugly ducklings everywhere who saw themselves in Katie—including Sex and the City s Carrie Bradshaw, who really wasnt as pretty as Big was handsome but was eventually smart enough to know that she didnt need to be. Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand in The Way We Were. Columbia Pictures/Photofest. WORKING GIRL 1988 Harrison Ford as an aw-shucks Apollo. Sigourney Weaver like Hera from on high. And Melanie Griffith a working-class mortal who believes she can succeed in high finance. “I have a head for business, ” she tells Ford, “and a bod for sin. ” A Cinderella story set in the world of mergers and acquisitions, Working Girl is yet another romance of transformation, but theres nothing passive about Tess McGill, the character played by Griffith. When her boss—Weavers Katharine Parker—is laid up in Europe with a broken leg, Tess smooths her Staten Island perm into a classic French twist (a nod to mom Tippi Hedren) puts on a power suit (remember shoulder pads. and takes a meeting (pretending to be Parkers colleague) with Fords Jack Trainer. Its a well-built little film with a great supporting cast, a stirring finale, and, in Ford and Griffith, an adorable update on the classic rich-poor couple of the 30s.
