ESPECIALLY WITH THAT ENGLISH ACCENT AMIRITE. I dont care what happened with the Eminem and MGK beef, hes CUTE. Directioners ? 😭. From a distance, Big Time Adolescence might look like not much more than a low-budget showcase for lovable SNL goofball Pete Davidson. Which would be fine. But the movie is, surprisingly, quite a bit more. It's a perceptive coming-of-age tale brought to life—under the guidance of first-time director Jason Orley—by an ensemble of terrific young actors. It's funny (Orley also wrote the script), but it's filled with honest emotion, too. The picture won't change the world, but it could change an otherwise joyless day for the better. (It was intended for a theatrical-only release last weekend; but then, as world news grew dark and the home-viewing audience began to swell, it was launched on Hulu, as well. ) Davidson naturally has the showiest role here, playing Zeke, a 20-something slacker who's long past his grow-the-fuck-up date. With his bagged-out clothing and many tattoos, Davidson's Zeke is pretty much the same giddy clown we know from TV. The comic gives a carefully shaped dramatic performance, however, effectively demonstrating the shortcomings of his character's let's-party approach to life. But he's still "Pete Davidson, " and the movie offers little proof that he'll be able to move beyond that persona. But Davidson isn't actually the star. The movie really belongs to the very quietly charismatic Griffin Gluck, playing a 16-year-old high-school student named Monroe. Mo, as he's called, is a bright and well-mannered kid who met Zeke when the older guy was dating Mo's sister, Kate (Emily Arlook). During that now-concluded period, Mo came to look up to Zeke as an older-brother surrogate ("He took me to R-rated movies, he showed me a picture of a naked girl on his phone, " we're told in a voice-over), and they've stayed tight ever since. (The movie doesn't acknowledge the basic creepiness of a 23-year-old man obsessively hanging out with a teenage boy—that's not the subject it wants to deal with—but it's impossible to ignore, and it's a flaw in the film. ) When Mo hears about an upcoming cool-kids party, his friend Stacey (Thomas Barbusca) says they should go and bring along booze and drugs to ease their acceptance by this older crowd. Zeke, who's made a career out of getting wasted, supplies the goods, and over the course of succeeding parties, using Mo as a dealer, he builds up a nice little sideline—one profitable enough to allow him to quit the latest of his many dismal jobs, as a clerk at a discount store. (Zeke tells Mo he eventually wants to become a talk-show host, or maybe start a podcast; later he says he's written a screenplay "in my head. " We can see where his life isn't going. ) Fate tosses Mo a potential lifeline in the form of a girl named Sophie (Oona Laurence, whose clipped, no-nonsense cool recalls Emma Watson in the early Harry Potter films). We observe their first date and first kiss—both sweet, but not treacly—and then watch in dismay as Mo solicits advice on how to treat women…from Zeke, a man whose romantic experience consists largely of serial dumpings. The movie maintains a careful balance between showing us what makes Zeke so seductive (he offers the freedom of not caring about anything) and so darkly alarming (he really doesn't care about anything at all). Will Mo wise up? Of course. In time? Don't count on it.

In the new comedy Big Time Adolescence, Saturday Night Live regular Pete Davidson finds a screen vehicle perfectly suited to his quirky talents, and in fact even manages a few scenes that actually bring more than one dimension to a strictly one-dimensional character. Hulu started streaming the film early this week after a theatrical run was cut short when theaters were forced to close due to the coronavirus pandemic. It’s nice escapist fare, and I probably don’t have to tell you that boy do we need it now. Deadline In reality, this amusing and entertaining comedy that debuted a year ago at Sundance is above average for the teen genre, keeping itself grounded in believable characters and making a pretty decent coming-of-age story centered on Mo, who is winningly played by Griffin Gluck, an actor at age 17 who has amassed a veteran’s worth of screen and TV credits that started with his big break opposite Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in 2011’s Just Go For It. Although you might expect a Davidson project to follow in the footsteps of the usual over-the-top high jinks in many (fellow SNL vet) Sandler movies, writer-director Jason Orley shows some welcome restraint in his behind-the-camera debut by never forgetting his characters are human beings, albeit with lots of shortcomings. It starts with a flashback to when Mo was 10 and tagging along with his older sister and her then-high school boyfriend Zeke (Davidson). Cut to six years later and Mo and Zeke are still the best of friends, long after sis has dumped the dead-end BF, outgrowing his childish antics far earlier than little ‘bro ever will. Zeke is a true slacker, hanging with a kid seven years younger and giving him all the wrong advice and encouragement, from getting him to sell weed to classmates to torpedoing a budding romance by urging Mo to ignore a girl, Sophie (Oona Laurence), after a first date in order to keep her “wanting more. ” With free-flowing alcohol, drugs and just about every bad influence, including his own friends and current girlfriend Holly (Sydney Sweeney), Zeke is the kind of guy the basically nice, clean-cut Mo should have stayed far away from, but instead thinks is cool to have as a BFF. It also doesn’t help that Mo has another friend his own age, Jon (Thomas Barbusca), who is just as lethal to be around, and it all goes in bad directions for Mo despite the best efforts of his strict father Reuben (Jon Cryer) to keep him on the straight and narrow and away from Zeke, whom he never liked when he was dating his daughter. Zeke is clearly a guy with no redeeming qualities and a work ethic that is virtually non-existent. ‘Big Time Adolescence’ Redband Trailer: Pete Davidson Schools Griffin Gluck In The Ways Of Pre-Adulthood We have seen this kind of setup before where an older guy serves as a bad example for impressionable younger people (think Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused, and even Frank Sinatra in Neil Simon’s Come Blow Your Horn). The role is perfectly tailored for Davidson, who plays it mostly for laughs as his Zeke seems clueless as to the impact of his behavior. He is a hopeless case, and Orley’s script never tries to redeem him, something a lesser-talented filmmaker might be tempted to do. The real growth is from Mo, and Gluck plays him as a basically good kid who gets way in over his head, allowing his own immaturity to get the better of him. A scene near the end between Mo and Zeke (now flipping hamburgers) is beautifully played, with the real truth of their relationship apparent between the lines with no explanation necessary. Davidson clearly has the more colorful role and shows promise beyond his TV image, but Gluck is the one who brings this film much-needed gravitas and is one to watch. Cryer tones down his own usual comic tendencies for a more typical parental role here, and there is very fine work from Laurence as the smart girl who got away, and Sweeney who also seems to know well the loser with which she is currently hooked up while bonding in her own way with Mo. Orley, who was a personal assistant to writer-director Nancy Meyers and learned a lot from that experience, invests this story with a sense of real life in between the comical set pieces. His script was actually on the Black List in 2014, and you can see why. It never falls in the trap of so many gross-out teen-oriented comedies, and that’s a relief. Producers are Mickey Liddell, Mason Novick, Jeremy Garelick, Will Phelps, Peter Shilaimon and Glen Trotiner. Check out my video review above with scenes from the film. Pete Davidson plays a role model with platinum blond hair and a taste for weed in this coarse coming-of-age comedy, the debut film of the writer-director Jason Orley. The plot centers on a brotherly relationship between Davidson’s character, a 23-year-old named Zeke, and Mo (Griffin Gluck), his ex-girlfriend’s 16-year-old younger brother, whom he walks through the finer points of the suburban slacker lifestyle. The story also involves small-time drug dealing and Mo’s pursuit of a crush (played by Oona Laurence). “Though Davidson, Gluck and Laurence show star potential, Orley either boxes them into a too-conventional coming-of-age arc or gives them cloyingly charming characteristics, ” Kristen Yoonsoo Kim wrote in her review for The New York Times. “Despite some moments of tenderness and easy chemistry between Zeke and Mo, ” Kim added, “‘Big Time Adolescence’ doesn’t have enough heart or humor to save it from becoming just another movie about white dudes bro-ing out. ” THE 400 BLOWS (1959) Rent on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu and YouTube. More roving adolescent mischief can be found in this drama, a foundational work of the French New Wave and the debut movie of François Truffaut. The film follows Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), a 12-year-old truant causing trouble on the streets of Paris. When it was released in the United States in 1959, Bosley Crowther referred to it as “a small masterpiece” in his review for The Times. “Where previous films on similar subjects have been fatted and fictionalized with all sorts of adult misconceptions and sentimentalities, ” he wrote, “this is a smashingly convincing demonstration on the level of the boy — cool, firm and realistic, without a false note or a trace of goo. ” FEEL GOOD Stream on Netflix. “Can you just lie on top of me and tell me something Canadian? ” That question comes early in this romantic-comedy series, which stars the comedian Mae Martin as a version of herself, a Canadian in London. Making the request is George (Charlotte Ritchie), an English woman whom Mae begins dating. Much of the drama comes from a pair of struggles: George, who hasn’t dated a woman before, is hesitant to come out to her family and friends, and Mae is a recovering addict. “It’s a work of fiction, ” Martin recently told the British newspaper The Guardian. “But it’s got an emotional truth, because it’s based on experiences I’ve had. ” AFTER TRUTH: DISINFORMATION AND THE COST OF FAKE NEWS (2020) 9 p. on HBO. In his 2011 documentary, “Page One: Inside The New York Times, ” the filmmaker Andrew Rossi explored the inner workings of The Times at a moment when the paper was struggling to adapt to the internet age. His latest doc, “After Truth, ” looks at one of the biggest issues to spike in media since: disinformation, and the way untruths are spread through social media.
